How to Contest an Eviction

Question: How can I contest an eviction that never happened?

I lived at an apartment complex last year, and since they never held up on their agreements to repair damaged items in my apartment, I paid over $2K to get out of my lease early, which included March's rent, and that would have been my last month there.

I just applied to get a new apartment with my fiance. We found out that the old complex filed evictions against me in the Courts TWICE in the same month. How is this possible?

I contacted the old complex and they said that since I paid the full amount to get out of my lease AND I received a check back for the amount of my safety deposit, I was NOT evicted. They are currently working with their home office in Michigan to find out what they can do, too.

Is there any help that you can give me to find out how to get this taken care of?

Answer: You can get a letter from the complex management or owner stating that you didn't get evicted. Then the letter needs to be sent to all the credit reporting agencies with a request that it be posted to your credit report, if they won't just take it off.   Read the rest of this entry »

Changing Mortgage Details & House Deeds

Question: What are the fees for changing mortgage details and house deeds?

My partner owned his house before we met but since we have been living together we have had a joint bank account and have been equally contributing to the house. He would like me to be put on the mortgage and the deeds due to security and commitment reasons, which I believe can be quite pricey. Can anyone help us with a rough figure on this? Many thanks!

Rent Assistance

Question: Where can I get rent assistance?

I need rent assistance fast. Where can I find rent assistance in 24 hours?

Answer: Start with any church you or your family or friends attend.

Look in yellow pages for Social Service Agencies and write down the ones that sound likely.

Get up at 8 tomorrow and make your first call 211 to see if your community has a help line. If not call United Way in your area and ask for a list of agencies that may help. Call each one and try to set an appointment for that afternoon. Salvation Army and the nearest large Catholic church should be among your first calls because both normally have help programs.

If you still have time before appointments start along about the M's in the church listings in your Yellow Pages or on Switchboard and work forwards or backwards till you have tried as may as you can. The ones in the middle get fewer calls so are more likely to be able to help.   Read the rest of this entry »
